With Netflix’s A Classic Horror Story, an Italian synthesis of the most recognized parts of genre standards ranging from The Texas Chain Saw Massacre to Cabin in the Woods, the current litany of horror film parody continues. Directors Roberto de Feo and Paolo Strippoli are particularly interested in combining some of the most effective sequences from contemporary and old horror classics into a vehemently meta narrative commentary, as the film’s title suggests—yet this process of borrowing and blending ultimately yields unconvincing results.
When it releases next month, A Classic Horror Story, an upcoming Italian film, is sure to win a position on the streaming service’s list of most-watched films. The first official trailer for Netflix’s A Classic Horror Story, which follows a group of strangers as they journey to southern Italy, was recently published. On the way, they make light of the fact that they are being pursued by a psychopath a la Pennywise from It.

A Classic Horror Story Movie About
A Classic Horror Script is a new Italian horror film directed by Roberto De Feo and Paolo Strippoli, with a story by De Feo, Strippoli, Lucio Besana, David Bellini, and Milo Tissone. Last month, a teaser was published that characterized the film as “Italian Midsommar meets Texas Chain Saw Massacre,” and based on this trailer, that description is spot on.
There are so many horror allusions in this. The concept of a bunch of individuals being stuck in a camper is straight out of Texas Chain Saw Massacre. Midsommar looks just like those images of big crowds of cult-like people congregating. The torture gadgets make me think of Saw. It is mentioned explicitly by the characters. There’s a character who wears a wooden mask that seems like it belongs to Jason Voorhees. IMDB
With the main character wielding a shotgun, it reminds me of The Evil Dead. Everyone ends up at a cabin in the woods, which is a plot device used in both Cabin in the Woods and a billion other horror movies. The typeface used in the video is the Halloween font. We could go on forever.
Review A Classic Horror Story Movie
Five carpoolers drive in a motorhome to a similar destination in “A Classic Horror Story.” They smash into a tree to escape a dead animal carcass as night sets. They find themselves in the midst of nowhere when they come to their senses. The road they were on has vanished, leaving only a deep, impenetrable forest and a wooden building in the center of a clearing, which they discover to be the headquarters of a terrifying cult.
Beyond that, we don’t know much about the video, although the official YouTube description is tantalizing: “A camper. There was an automobile accident. A home that has been abandoned. In the background, there is children’s music. Do you believe you’ve seen it before? “Take another look.” We have no clue what it implies, but if the film manages to twist all of this in an intriguing and terrifying way, this film might be something amazing.

Although the picture begins with an overt resemblance to Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, the audience is briefly relieved—A Classic Horror Story isn’t plagiarizing the infamous Leatherface and his cannibalistic clan. Instead, the film taps into the current horror zeitgeist to produce an equally repulsive Frankenstein’s monster of incessant allusions and references.
Midsommar and The Village, for example, are examined for their power to shock viewers, then extended recklessly to make the directors’ contradictory, muddled argument about the condition of horror filmmaking—particularly in their home Italy. The film is allegedly on the benefits of auteurism in the genre, focusing on the approaches of Hooper, Shyamalan, and Aster, but it fails to include any of Italy’s masterpieces.
The film’s overt attempt to criticize Italy’s movie industry and production in relation to worldwide horror offerings is further muddled by the absence of major essence of Mario Bava, Dario Argento, or Lucio Fulci (to mention a few).

Italian film is presently resurrecting the horror genre for which it became famous in the 1960s and 1970s. Another contemporary Italian horror film with a fresh twist is Andrea De Sica’s “Non Mi Uccidere” (Don’t Kill), about a 19-year-old named Mirta who dies of a heroin overdose with her older boyfriend Robin. She eventually resuscitates on her own, only to discover that she must feed living humans in order to continue living and treasure the memories of Robin’s love.

A Classic Horror Story Movie Cast
Stars: Matilda Lutz, Yulia Sobol, Will Merrick, Francesco Russo, Peppino Mazzotta, Alida Baldari Calabria, Cristina Donadio
A Classic Horror Story rounds the blood-soaked drain of horror tropes with little return when it comes to creating an organic remark, despite a visual slickness paired with occasional sequences of stunning cruelty. Especially in light of the success of horror-commentary films like the satirical Cabin in the Woods and the irreverent Scary Movie trilogy, this distinctively Italian effort has nothing to say about the genre’s cliches, traditions, and flaws. The film’s end urgently wants to point a finger at something on a national level, but its message is too jumbled to make a cohesive critique.
