Bliss Movie Review
Greg (Owen Wilson) is working in customer service with a dead-end career. We heard from his daughter’s telephone call that he’s divorced and doesn’t have a decent relationship with his family. His daughter would like him to come to her graduation, though, and he tells her he’s going to be there.
Greg is invited to meet with his manager, Bjorn (Steve Zissis), who fires Greg because he is never focused on his job. Greg kicks Bjorn in a fit of rage, who hits his head on his desk and dies. Covers the body and flees instead of calling 911. He meets a woman with telekinesis at a bar called Isabel (Salma Hayek), who thinks he is “real” because he has deflected her powers. She informs Greg that she would help him escape jail for his crime if he can help her get a special amulet that has special powers to manipulate the false universe. He does so, and then Isabel informs him that the universe is an artificial simulation and that it can be controlled by Greg.
What is the Movie Bliss About?
I don’t know if it’s actually true. But I don’t know if that’s exactly what Bliss and I were chasing after. I do like a person’s story about chasing heaven, or chasing numbness, maybe? Ignorance is bliss, you know, but ignorance is just kind of not-knowing, while numbness is deliberate not-knowing, closing the noise out. What is heaven here? What’s this peace idea? We’re telling a story where someone is chasing it, and through the arc, through the drama, through his love for Isabel, he really learns to love our world’s uncertainty and suspense, the noise, the whole thing. In the climax, there’s something exhilarating as she says, “This is awful, this is a nightmare.” And Owen’s character looks at her, and it dawns on him, he loves his crazy world through her.
That’s an idea I love. Since this is counterintuitive, huh? It’s real. As a metaphor, take it back many, many years, to the apple and the fall from grace. You remember Milton’s version of Paradise’s Collapse. That you get to enjoy the flesh and the thrill is not a disaster. The bits that are funny. You get it from the character of Salma, Isabel-you feels like she’s almost getting tired of living in paradise. In the chaos, there is some exhilaration, and the cyclical struggle is kind of wonderful. So, I don’t think we’re denying heaven, but we need to balance it out, I think.
What Happens in the Movie Bliss
Most of what makes us involved in “Bliss” comes from our questioning of what is happening. Has it ever occurred? Is the world that we see real? Is this a science fiction movie, or are we really watching a weak and drugged mind’s hallucinations?
The fact that “Bliss,” on Friday, Feb. 5, is available on Amazon Prime, does not answer these questions entirely, will count against it with some viewers, that it does not pin down any degree of reality or explain all its tricks. That would be the wrong way to watch it, though. Think of “Bliss” instead of as an experience, not an issue to be solved.
By the end, we get enough to bring together a pretty clear idea of what happened, and you can conclude that the rest is meaningless. The thing that this film really is about, the thing that it examines with subdued and sincere intensity, is human fragility, and the story is kept together by the capacity of Owen Wilson to represent and convey that.

Storyline About Bliss Movie
Greg discovers Bjorn, his boss, alive and freaks him out. Greg that he has been rebooted. Isabel and Greg rob a dude and have more money to buy “blues” from a guy named Kendo for his wallet (Ronny Chieng). Isabel fires Kendo but maintains that he’s not going to die. It seems obvious at this point that Isabel is a homeless drug addict, and now Greg is, too.
They are encircled by the police. He says he loves the chaotic world of “simulation” built by Isabel and that he is not going to leave it. Isabel takes the medication and hands herself over to the authorities, while Greg runs away to rehabilitate himself. He outlines his path of addiction to the support group, seeking “bliss.” Although it is not clearly mentioned, we can assume that it was not really in the utopian world. The sensation of being high off of crystal meth (aka “blue crystal) was a fantasy spun around it.” And fantasy was also the “powers” that Isabel and Greg had earlier in the film, spun around the feeling of being high off of powder meth, aka the amulet’s yellow pills.
