Coming 2 America Trailer
My desert island film is “Coming to America.” I’ve seen it so many times that I can read the dialogue off the top of my head. Since Daryl’s family left those Jheri Curl activator stains on the couch in 1988, I’ve never laughed so hard or heard so much continuous laughter. It may be argued that this analysis is unfairly harsh on the sequel. However, I agree that if I hadn’t seen the original film, I would have had little or no enjoyment from this. I did chuckle, and it was out loud and unapologetically. Unfortunately, there was enough downtime in between the laughs that I began to obsess over a variety of plot issues.
Director Craig Brewer and John Landis
Coming 2 America, directed by Craig Brewer and John Landis, is a remake of both Landis’ 1988 classic Coming to America and John Landis’ 1983 film Trading Places, which also stars Eddie Murphy. In order to bring the fallen Duke & Duke empire up to date after Coming to America, Landis reveals that the Duke brothers have risen to prominence again between films, as shown by Calvin (Colin Jost) introducing himself as “Mr. Duke” during a work interview with Lavelle Junson (Jermaine Fowler), Prince Akeem’s illegitimate son (Eddie Murphy).
Eddie Murphy Coming 2 America
Eddie Murphy When we first started doing comedy, there were probably only about ten Black comedians in the entire world, but everybody knew each other. You form a clique with the people you think are funny because comics are really cliquish. There were four or five of the ten Black comics with whom I never became friends. [Audience laughter] I met Arsenio via Keenen [Ivory Wayans] when I first moved out here.
Eddie Murphy reprises his role as Prince Akeem in the film. He discovers he has a son, Lavelle (Jermaine Fowler), who lives in Queens as he ascends to the throne of Zamunda. Director Craig Brewer reunites many of the original cast members while also introducing newcomers such as Kiki Layne as Princess Meeka and Leslie Jones as Lavelle’s mother, Mary.
Co-written Kenya Barris Coming 2 America
This sequel, co-written by Kenya Barris (Girls Trip) and directed by Craig Brewer (Hustle & Flow, Dolemite Is My Name), reverses the fish-out-of-water plot of the first film, with Murphy’s Prince Akeem and sidekick Semmi (Arsenio Hall) returning to Queens for a brief visit to retrieve Akeem’s secret “bastard son” Lavelle. Though Fowler is incredibly likable as a sweet-natured slacker, channeling the endearing guilelessness of Murphy’s original Prince Akeem, the comedy doesn’t work quite as well this time around.
Fans of Randy Watson and his band Sexual Chocolate need not worry; there are enough in-jokes and returning characters to keep them entertained. I laughed out loud at a flashback involving Lavelle’s mother Mary (Ghostbusters’ Leslie Jones) and a pumpkin spice scented candle. There’s a throwaway joke about cult TV sitcom Benson, a cameo from 90s R&B group En Vogue, and beautiful Ankara-print costumes modeled by Ruth E Carter in the film, which proudly celebrates a large swath of Black culture (Black Panther).
Coming 2 America Cast
As mentioned above, Coming 2 America really does have a stacked cast. Eddie Murphy, Arsenio Hall, Jermaine Fowler, Leslie Jones, Tracy Morgan, KiKi Layne, Shari Headley, Teyana Taylor, Wesley Snipes, James Earl Jones.
Coming 2 America means that Akeem’s initial donation was sufficient to lift the Duke brothers out of their predicament. Calvin Duke seems to be more generous than his forefathers during his interview with Lavelle, as he at least requests to be called “Calvin” informally. When Calvin’s dialogue with Lavelle progresses, it becomes apparent that, like his grandfather and great uncle, Calvin’s decisions are clouded by certain disturbing racist stereotypes about absent fathers and drug abuse. A framed oil painting of the Duke brothers hangs in Calvin’s office, as if to emphasize the character’s biases. “There was blueface over the blackface!” Calvin says at the end of the interview, trying to justify his decision to attend an office party dressed in Aladdin-inspired blackface.
Due to pandemic Coming 2 America
