Before the MCU was a thing, Fox’s X-Men films were the MCU. Fox had big ambitions for their own X-Men cinematic world back then, including spinoff films for specific X-Men characters. For a long time, Channing Tatum was attached to play Remy Etienne LeBeau aka Gambit Movie, a mutant with the power to harness kinetic energy to cause items to explode, in a solo film.
Rupert Wyatt, the director of Gambit Movie, was first approached with the project. When discussions with Wyatt fell through, Gore Verbinski of Pirates of the Caribbean fame joined the project before exiting the project as well. Now, in an interview with Collider, Gore Verbinski explains why his Gambit film was never made, citing terrible timing and a lack of a strong script as the major reasons.
Gambit Movie About
In 2014, Tatum was originally linked to Gambit. Despite being in a group shot with stars from the X-Men films Deadpool and X-Men: Apocalypse, Gambit Movie was marketed as a stand-alone film that defied origin tale conventions. Mister Sinister’s debut in Gambit was teased in the post-credits sequence of X-Men: Apocalypse, although Tatum’s version of the villain would be introduced as a solo performance.
Tatum’s passion for the part was one of Gambit’s distinguishing characteristics in the early days of production. Tatum was itching to portray Gambit after almost being cast as the role in X-Men: The Last Stand and Wolverine: Origins. He also mentioned that he wanted to portray the Cajun X-Man because of his New Orleans heritage. Ryan Reynolds’ ambition to play Deadpool was similar to his enthusiasm for the character.
One of the film’s other distinguishing qualities, however, was the number of directors it went through. During the film’s production, Rupert Wyatt, Doug Liman, and Gore Verbinski all served as directors. While Wyatt and Verbinski officially stated that they had to pull out due to schedule issues, Liman confessed that he wasn’t “feeling” the script. Following the failure of Fantastic Four, Wyatt subsequently stated that his version of the film’s budget was reduced.
Review Gambit Movie
The artwork, which was shared on Instagram by digital artist ‘savagecomics,’ has Channing Tatum sporting Gambit’s famous staff and bio-kinetic charging abilities, as well as the hero’s trademark face mask. Although it’s a nice look for the Kingsman and 21 Jump Street actor, it appears doubtful that he’ll ever have the chance to portray Gambit on the big screen. Kevin Feige just stated that X-Men negotiations are still underway at Marvel Studios, so who knows? Below you can watch Channing Tatum in the role of Gambit.
Kinberg also explains that the character was never cast, putting an end to speculations that Jon Hamm would appear as Mister Sinister in Josh Boone’s The New Mutants. (Drat.) And while Tatum’s version of the Ragin’ Cajun will never be seen, it won’t be long until Disney reboots the X-Men series and unleashes a whole new generation of mutants on us. (I, for one, am eagerly anticipating the return of the Spiny Guy from X-Men: The Last Stand.) For more on the X-Men, check out how The New Mutants is a Guns N’ Roses album.

Tatum’s Gambit, on the other hand, was never intended to be. It has seen several setbacks throughout the years, ranging from director changes to continuous release date shuffles. Gambit was previously expected to start filming in February 2019 and be released in March of that year. That, however, did not appear to be the case. When Disney completed its acquisition of Fox and assessed its new Fox holdings, the studio decided to officially shelve Gambit Movie in May 2019.
Surprisingly, this Gambit fan film also features another X-Men character who has had a difficult time making it to the big screen: Magik. The New Mutants, starring Anya Taylor-Joy as the formidable Illyana Rasputin, has been postponed several times in recent years. It had been expected in April of this year, but the coronavirus epidemic has pushed it back until August. As of right now, The New Mutants is set to premiere in August, so fans may finally get to see Magik in action before the year is up. Unfortunately, Gambit does not share this sentiment.

Gambit has always had a strange development cycle. Gambit’s inclusion in the live-action X-Men film cycle began with director Bryan Singer’s attempt to include the character in the highly anticipated sequel X2 in 2003. It didn’t go as planned, which turned out to be a recurring issue for Gambit. Gambit made his first appearance in X-Men Origins: Wolverine in 2009. Producers wanted Tatum to play the part, but due to schedule difficulties, it was given to Taylor Kitsch of Friday Night Lights. Despite the fact that Wolverine wasn’t exactly recognized as a fantastic superhero film, Tatum never gave up on the job, told the press at a White House Down press conference in 2013.
Tatum was at the pinnacle of his profession at the time. Everyone wanted him in their movies when Magic Mike made him into a worldwide sex symbol. Fox chose to take a risk on him by giving him a film based on a character that has only appeared in one X-Men film, one that even the writers are trying to forget ever occurred. That happened in 2014. Since then, the proposed Gambit film has gone through three directors, several writers, scheduling issues, and a studio purchase. True Gambit fans have always known that our swashbuckling, quirky superhero will never make it to the big screen.

Kinberg stated shortly after the deal was completed that Gambit was one of the films whose future was being considered by its new owner, giving supporters optimism that it might see the light of day. The final of the X-Men films in development, Gambit, was canceled along with three mystery projects by Disney a few weeks later. Dark Phoenix and The New Mutants were the final X-Men films made under Fox’s supervision.
The remark matches that of the project’s initial director, Rupert Wyatt, who said that the film’s dismal commercial response in 2015 ultimately sank his take on the Gambit character, lowering the budget to the point where the screenplay could no longer be completed without substantial rewrites.
In any case, the Fantastic Four will undoubtedly appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe soon, and given how little the Gambit character has been developed so far, we wouldn’t be shocked if Marvel included him in their X-Men launch, whenever that may be.
About Gambit Release Date
Nobody knows if Gambit Movie will ever be published because it has been moved around the calendar so many times. However, it has been given a fresh release date as of right now, this time for March 13, 2020.
According to WGTC, the studio will recast the lead character but bring back Gore Verbinski to direct the film, who was one of the initial directors involved with the project. A Cure for Wellness, Rango, The Lone Ranger (2013), The Ring, and Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl are among Verbinski’s credits. In other words, he is at ease working in the action genre, and he has a lot of experience directing big-budget movies, which Marvel Studios has grown quite familiar with.
Channing Tatum has been working with 20th Century Fox on a film called Gambit for quite some time. Laura Shuler Donner, a long-time X-Men producer, originally showed interest in casting Tatum for the part in early 2014, when Tatum openly said that Gambit was his favorite superhero as a kid. In May of 2014, Tatum agreed to play Remy LeBeau.
When Tatum originally expressed interest in playing Gambit, he told MTV that he “would die” to portray the Ragin’ Cajun. “Gambit is basically the only X-Man I’ve ever loved,” Tatum says. I mean, I love them all; they’re all fantastic, but I suppose being from the South–my father is from Louisiana, and I’m from Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida–I guess I just connected with him.”
In early 2014, producer Lauren Shuler Donner described him as her “ideal casting” for the part, and he was confirmed to portray Gambit a few months later. In November, his solo picture was officially revealed.
Rupert Wyatt signed on to helm the picture in the summer of 2015. Despite having a short IMDB page, the British filmmaker followed up his critically acclaimed picture The Escapist with the critical and commercial triumph of Rise of the Planet of the Apes. So far, everything has gone well, right?

Gambit, according to Tatum and the filmmakers, is more of a heist story than a typical superhero picture. The X-Men movies are dramatic and almost operatic, whereas Deadpool is irreverent and hilarious, and sort of a nasty R-rated comedy in many ways, producer Simon Kinberg told Collider in 2015. And Gambit will have its own distinct taste and tone, in some ways like a heist film and a sensual thriller.
The famous mutants are ready to make their triumphant debut in the MCU now that the X-Men are owned by Disney. Hopefully, Channing Tatum will be able to play Gambit the way he’s wanted to for a long time, even if it’ll be a completely different version of the character than what Fox originally envisioned. Collider is the source of this information.
