Willys Wonderland Movie One of the enduring problems of pop culture is why an acclaimed, Academy Award-winning actor such as Nicolas Cage will waste so much of his career squandering his talents in a series of B-movies that can be charitably categorized as baroque. Will he need the money to pay for even more exotic possessions than his rare fossil bones and Superman comic books? Fortunately, the actor gives as good an explanation as any in the production notes for his new outlandish work, Willy’s Wonderland, about a man battling in an abandoned children’s arcade with a host of animatronic creatures coming to life.
If Rob Zombie made a slasher movie that was also a “killer Muppets attack” movie, it might look like “Willy’s Wonderland.” Directed by Kevin Lewis, from a G.O. script. Parsons, this defiantly out-of-the-box and somehow very cunning grunge horror movie, set inside a run-down family fun center from dusk until dawn, is a tongue-in-cheek thriller that knows how ridiculous it is.

Willys Wonderland movie Review

Nicolas Cage is fighting evil, killer animatronics in Willy’s Wonderland on our screens ahead of the live-action Five Nights at Freddy’s movie, which is still bouncing around in production, and earnestly but crudely executed low-budget horror flick about a drifter who gets stuck inside a haunted Chuck E. Cheese-style pizzeria and left to die by the claws of a robotic weasel and its
Willy’s Wonderland is presented cheaply and goes for simple, low-hanging thrills, like the Chuck E. Cheese chain. It’s not pretty to look at and it’s kind of clumsily edited, intended to distract from some of the shoddiness in hyperkinetic ways, but the bare bones of this film are shockingly strong. No, “Nic Cage battling killer party puppets” is not enough to bring a whole movie with a gimmick, and Willy’s Wonderland is straining a bit to fill its already limited runtime, but for this kind of small development, it’s enough. A sort of over-long standalone X-Files episode is enough to render it.

Nicolas Cage continues his recent trend of lending his name and his gonzo acting to genre filmmakers eager to get a little wild with the way-out horror-comedy “Willy’s Wonderland.” The principles of Cage are admirable. His taste is very suspect.
Driven by Kevin Lewis and authored by G.O. Willy’s Wonderland” was blatantly engineered to be a cult movie by Parsons (whose screenplay Cage reportedly found on “the Blood List” of well-regarded un-produced horror scripts).” But as it needs to be, it never becomes as offbeat. The film has a nutty plot and a game star, but it runs out of new ideas too fast.

The film consists mostly of lavishly violent scenes in which the glowering Janitor goes mano-a-mano with the monsters (played in outlandish costumes by stunt performers), often succeeding in beating them to a pulp. He takes breaks from the chaos occasionally to play intense pinball games (featuring Cage in his most emotional film, showing the kind of choreographed animalism he displayed in Wild at Heart) and energy drinks swig cans. The Janitor manages to resume his cleaning duties, despite being regularly targeted by demonically possessed puppets, displaying the same sort of unruffled professionalism that Cage does in these films.
During a drinking game, “Willy’s Wonderland” sounds like a film. After a few tough days, a few individuals had a few too many and dared each other to come up with the most ludicrous notion they could make. This game’s winners were G.O.
The writer and producer, Parsons and Kevin Lewis, respectively, of a movie that seems to be too inherently enjoyable to fail. Imagine that the “Five Nights at Freddy’s” video game had an angry Nicolas Cage inside it, causing confusion and destruction. And then we’re going to put in some characters and tonal choices reminiscent of ’80s classics like “Friday the 13th” and “A Nightmare on Elm Street” (well, the sequels more than the originals). Sounds amazing, right?!?! What could’ve gone wrong? Too much. So much. Too much could go wrong.

“Willy’s Wonderland” is about a mystical tough guy fighting off goofy-looking robots at its simplest and strongest. This illustration is amusingly ridiculous, so long as it’s just Cage quietly clobbering mechanical humanoid bears and birds. But Lewis and Parson are hedging their bets, adding a bunch of unspecified troublemaking youngsters who set out to trash the restaurant, along with a shady cop who knows the dark secret of this location.

If you choose the Cage Rage Kit that does not come with dialogue included, one thing that could go wrong. Yeah, one of the key surprises that “Willy’s Wonderland” feels important to impart to potential audiences is that in this action/horror flick, the star of “Mandy” and “The one known for completely committed line readings of even the most absurd material, Color Out of Room, you know, doesn’t have a single line of dialogue. It’s certainly an option to go for a strong/silent thing like the Western heroes that people like Clint Eastwood have described, but that’s not really what Cage does here.
He’s got the snarl and the staredown, of course, but he’s closer to half-asleep than frightening-cool. Via some of his recent decisions, Cage has been accused of sleepwalking, letting the kitschy goodwill of his viral clips from other films do half of his acting for him. Oh, it was never truer than here.
Cage plays a drifter who gets stuck in a small town by a group of locals, including a Beth Grant-played sheriff. An agreement is reached when the drifter is told that his car repair would cost cash that the drifter doesn’t have. The auto repair is on the house if he can spend the night cleaning up the rundown family entertainment center known as Willy’s Wonderland. Of course, at an early point, audiences are aware that the plan is for our hero to never make it out of Wonderland. You see, every now and then the animatronic puppets there come to life, and they need a sacrifice. Meanwhile, a girl with a playland relation named Liv (Emily Tosta) persuades her friends to go with her once and for all to burn down the Wonderland, but they have to save the new janitor first. He doesn’t need to save them.

As secret and shifty Hayesville representatives who have devious plans for Cage’s lone wolf, Beth Grant, Ric Reitz, and Chris Warner fill out the adult roles here. It’s all pretty splattery and dumb, but it works tonally and everybody squeezes a good small-scale show out. Unfortunately, there are moments, particularly with the character of Cage, where you want a few more responses, and for the story to spread its wings a little more, but Willy’s Wonderland is kind of a slaughter-fest “as-is”
